Russia's First Carrier-Branded Mobile eSIM Router Enters the Market
MegaFon has launched Russia's first mobile eSIM router from a telecom operator. The device can be connected to the mobile network without leaving home.

Embedded SIM technology (eSIM) is gaining momentum in Russia. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIM allows devices to connect to a mobile network without requiring a physical SIM card, making remote activation possible. The technology is now expanding beyond smartphones, tablets and smartwatches into a broader range of connected devices.
Only a Gosuslugi Account Is Required
MegaFon recently began selling a mobile eSIM router, becoming the first Russian telecom operator to introduce a device in this category. Its main advantage is remote activation without visiting a retail store. To get started, users simply verify their identity through a Gosuslugi (State Services portal) account and then download the eSIM profile to the device using either the mobile application or the router's web interface.
MegaFon says the router was developed with participation from engineers at Yota. Their objective was to deliver a mobile router that would operate reliably across Russian mobile networks. As a result, unlike many comparable devices sold through online marketplaces, the new router maintains data throughput without reducing connection speeds, providing users with the highest level of access their network can support.

A Versatile Connectivity Solution
Demand for eSIM-enabled devices continues to grow. Beeline reported in 2025 that the number of customers choosing the technology had increased by 140% in a single year and had tripled over a two-year period.
"The router features a built-in 4,000 mAh battery that provides up to eight hours of standalone LTE operation, making it suitable for travel. It supports both digital eSIM profiles and traditional physical SIM cards, while allowing up to 32 devices to connect simultaneously over dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). That makes it a versatile solution for both home use and mobile connectivity scenarios," MegaFon's press office said.

eSIM Accelerates Digital Transformation
The technology is also gaining traction across enterprise and industrial markets, where it is helping accelerate digital transformation. eSIM makes it possible to remotely provision or switch operator profiles without requiring physical access to equipment. That capability is particularly valuable for devices deployed in vehicles, industrial facilities, utility metering systems, video surveillance networks and smart city infrastructure.
These developments have created the conditions for sustained market growth. By 2023, Russian telecom operators had registered approximately three million eSIM profiles. At that point, most activations still took place through retail stores, while industry participants emphasized the need to further expand remote onboarding channels.

Managing Digital Connectivity Profiles
Smartphones remain the primary application for eSIM technology, but adoption is steadily expanding into other device categories. In 2025, MegaFon announced the launch of Fontel children's smartwatches under its own brand. One of their defining features was built-in eSIM support.
"Modern technology has replaced the familiar SIM card with an embedded electronic SIM in both smartphones and smartwatches. We have offered eSIM-enabled smartwatch models through our retail network for several years, and their share of sales continues to grow. We will evaluate demand for the new router and expand the product lineup accordingly," MegaFon Sales Director David Borzilov said at the time.
The new eSIM router is likely to remain a niche product, primarily targeting frequent travelers. Even so, its launch reflects the market's gradual transition from selling physical SIM cards to managing digital connectivity profiles. At the same time, Russian regulators are strengthening safeguards around the technology. The easier remote activation becomes for users, the more robust identity verification and protection against unauthorized eSIM reissuance must be.
