Russia Premieres Its First Ballet With AI-Generated Design
Classical art meets cutting-edge technology in Yoshkar-Ola in the ballet Snow Maiden.

Russia has staged its first ballet featuring sets created with the help of artificial intelligence. The premiere of the innovative production Snow Maiden took place at the Mari State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Eric Sapaev in Yoshkar-Ola.
According to regional head Yuri Zaitsev, the visual design of the performance, including stage scenery and video elements, was generated using artificial intelligence technologies.
The musical score is based on works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, enriched with ethnic motifs by Mari composer Grigory Arkhipov.
New Creative Possibilities
The project brought together a large creative team. The production features the theatre’s ballet company and symphony orchestra, performers from the Mari El ensemble, and the Mari kundem folk instruments orchestra. Choreographers combined classical ballet with elements of traditional movement while preserving the central lyrical story of Snow Maiden.
Artificial intelligence is already being actively used in the arts in Russia, opening up new creative possibilities.
