Russian Libraries Use VR to Take Visitors on Virtual Journeys

With the help of virtual reality headsets, libraries in Russia are offering immersive tours around the world, outer space, and even the ocean floor—drawing interest from both kids and seniors.

Libraries across Russia are rolling out an innovative new service: virtual travel using VR headsets. The technology allows users to explore destinations across the globe, as well as deep-sea environments and outer space, without leaving the library.

One example is the Anna Akhmatova Central Library in Domodedovo, near Moscow, which has established a dedicated 'Hobbitheque' space where visitors aged 12 and up can learn how to use the VR gear.

Special emphasis is placed on the 'Active Longevity' program, which offers seniors virtual excursions. Elderly users enthusiastically take digital hikes up Mount Everest, go on virtual safaris, or dive into marine worlds—experiences that were once inaccessible.

In addition to travel experiences, libraries are also using VR for career exploration through job simulators, interactive educational tours, and screenings of informative films. Experts note the psychological benefits of these immersive experiences, including improved mood and reduced anxiety.

Russia is also developing custom therapeutic VR applications designed to help users manage anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic conditions. These programs place users in tranquil virtual environments such as forests, cozy rooms, or coastal scenes to promote relaxation and mental wellness.
