Russia’s Supreme Court Begins Using Artificial Intelligence to Modernize the Justice System

Smart algorithms will help analyze legal documents and court rulings, marking a major step in the digital transformation of Russia’s judiciary.

Russia’s Supreme Court is officially integrating artificial intelligence into its operations, signaling a new era for the country’s legal system. Newly appointed Chief Justice Igor Krasnov announced the initiative and ordered an accelerated transition to digital technologies across the judiciary.

The AI system will handle routine analytical work, including the processing of large datasets of court rulings to identify inconsistencies in legal interpretations and gaps in legislation that may need reform. However, Krasnov emphasized that final decisions in all cases will remain the responsibility of human judges.

Toward “Justice Online”

The technology is designed not to replace judges, but to serve as a high-tech assistant — streamlining workflows and improving the consistency and quality of justice delivery.

Russian courts are already expanding their digital infrastructure. Citizens can now file documents, track case progress, and pay court fees online. The government is also developing a “Justice Online” super-service, which will enable remote participation in court hearings.

Krasnov added that one of the judiciary’s upcoming priorities is improving IT-related legislation, ensuring that the country’s legal framework evolves alongside the technologies transforming it.
