Up to a Quarter of Payments via Biometrics
Over the past year, new use cases for biometric technologies have emerged. Russians can now use simplified hotel check-in, verify their age when making purchases without presenting a passport, and confirm their identity when obtaining SIM cards.
Earlier, Alla Bakina, head of the national payment system department at the Bank of Russia, said that by 2030 the share of payments made via QR codes and biometric technologies in Russia could exceed 20–25%.
IT Russia has previously reported that a law extending biometric identification to all Russian airports is expected by the end of 2026. For now, pilot projects allowing biometric boarding and airport access are being launched at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg and Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow.
