Russia’s Railways to Fully Switch to Domestic Software by 2030

Russian Railways will transition all critical systems to locally developed software within the next two years, aiming for complete independence by the end of the decade.
Russia’s railway infrastructure is undergoing a sweeping digital overhaul. By 2030, all systems will run exclusively on Russian-made software, according to Russian Railways Deputy CEO Yevgeny Charkin, who spoke at the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia conference.
The transition for business-critical systems will be even faster, with a full shift to domestic platforms expected by 2027.
The IT transformation spans every aspect of operations—from logistics to customer service. In just five years, electronic document workflows have grown nearly fourfold, from 6 million in 2019 to 22 million in 2024.
Staff now use the corporate messaging app 'Express' and participate in online training modules. Even freight transportation is fully integrated into modern digital control systems.
This push toward technological self-reliance is part of Russia’s broader strategy to secure critical infrastructure using homegrown solutions.
