ALROSA Deploys AI in Diamond Exploration

Neural networks are now helping geologists tackle applied challenges in the search for new diamond deposits.

Engineers from ALROSA’s Vilyui Geological Exploration Expedition have integrated artificial intelligence algorithms into the company’s exploration workflow. The pilot was conducted within the Alakit-Markha kimberlite field in the Mirny district of Yakutia, an area known for its complex geological structure.

The neural network was trained on more than 50 years of digitized geological data collected by ALROSA’s exploration units. Researchers identified patterns associated with known kimberlite bodies and assessed the likelihood of similar signatures within the study area. Deep convolutional neural networks proved especially effective at detecting linear structures – faults and fractures in the Earth’s crust.

“Analysis showed that virtually all previously discovered kimberlite pipes are located near or at the intersection of such linear structures. Identifying this pattern will be crucial in the search for new deposits,” said ALROSA Chief Geologist Roman Zhelonkin.

Drilling on AI-Selected Sites

Machine learning algorithms also helped forecast the thickness of overburden layers, classify key types of geological cross-sections, and estimate the probability of kimberlite pipe occurrence.

The use of AI enabled geologists to pinpoint the most promising areas for further exploration. These targets are scheduled for drilling during the 2026 field season.
