Database of Steel Piles Developed for Construction on Permafrost
Specialists at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University have developed a database of steel drilled-and-driven piles designed for use in permafrost conditions.
The database contains physical, mechanical and performance characteristics of piles made from 09G2S steel. When compiling the dataset, the developers took into account the operating conditions of foundations in frozen soils, including freeze-thaw cycles, thermal deformation, shaft adhesion forces and service loads. The database therefore contains information not only about the piles themselves but also about the conditions in which they operate.
The development is intended to support more informed selection and design calculations for pile foundations at facilities in Russia’s Far North. Changes in soil temperature can significantly affect foundation performance in these areas, making such factors important to consider during the design process.
