Robotized Complex Developed in Nizhny Novgorod Region to Combat Giant Hogweed
The system consists of two machines.
A robotized complex has been developed in Nizhny Novgorod Region to combat giant hogweed. It consists of two machines – a mulcher and a sprayer – that work as a pair. First, the mulcher cuts a path through the weed, followed by the second machine, which applies chemicals.
The developers say this is the first ground-based system in Russia designed to eradicate giant hogweed. It was developed by specialists from the Scientific and Production Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (NPC UAS) and the Korona enterprise.
“NPC UAS already has experience treating agricultural fields affected by giant hogweed with agricultural drones. The new project builds on that expertise by adding ground-based robotic technologies. This is the first project in Russia to remotely treat areas affected by giant hogweed using ground-based equipment,” said Maxim Cherkasov, the region’s minister of industry, trade and entrepreneurship.
The mulcher can treat up to 2 hectares per shift, while the sprayer can cover up to 25 hectares. The system can be operated remotely from a distance of up to 300 meters.
