RusHydro’s intelligent electricity metering system has been transferred to the cloud infrastructure of MegaFon. The platform already connects about 1.2 million smart meters that automatically transmit electricity consumption data. All information is now stored in the operator’s cloud, which will manage the entire digital infrastructure. Internet of Things technologies are already used by 12 grid and energy retail companies in different regions of Russia.

The move to the cloud also allows users to access electricity consumption data through personal online accounts. The platform helps monitor payment discipline and reduce energy losses in the grid.

Piramida Reaches the Cloud

The technological backbone of the project is software called Piramida 2.0. The platform operates in the operator’s cloud and is responsible for processing and storing data.

The system uses a fault-tolerant architecture and multi-level data redundancy. Information is stored simultaneously in three Tier III data centers that ensure stable service operation and minimize the risk of data loss.

A role-based access model is used to protect the system. All data flows into the corporate center of the intelligent metering system, where it is processed in accordance with industry security standards.

A Nationwide Project

According to MegaFon, the scale of the smart metering system is comparable to the infrastructure of a large city. The telecom operator manages the full lifecycle of the platform, including connectivity between meters and the digital system, as well as technical support for the software.

Project participants estimate that by 2030 the number of devices connected to the system could grow by 75 percent and exceed two million. In that case, the platform would become one of the largest smart electricity metering projects in Russia.
