Russia Launches First AI-Powered Histology Scanner Into Mass Production

The OneCell Scan 3.0 system scans biopsy slides in under three minutes and outperforms Chinese competitors, signaling a leap in domestic medtech innovation.

Russia has begun mass production of its first domestically developed AI-powered histology slide scanner, the OneCell Scan 3.0. Created by the company Vancell in partnership with the state corporation Rostec, the device can digitize up to 288 biopsy samples simultaneously, analyze tissues using neural networks, and feed the results into a unified digital medical system, according to reporting by First Technical.

The scanner processes glass slides containing biological material in just two to three minutes, providing up to 63x magnification. Its AI engine automatically detects pathologies, compresses images, and converts them into binary codes for rapid retrieval from databases. The OneCell platform that powers the scanner has already assisted in diagnosing more than one million cases.

In terms of performance, the Russian scanner rivals top-tier German and Japanese models and surpasses those made in China. The manufacturer plans to produce up to 25 units annually, with the potential to scale production to 200 units per year.

By deploying the OneCell Scan 3.0, Russian medical centers can expect faster diagnoses and a reduced reliance on imported diagnostic technologies.
