Russian Scientists Achieve a Quantum Breakthrough in 2025

Scientific experiments have delivered successful results.

In 2025, Russian scientists made a series of notable advances in quantum science. Research was carried out at the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University, MISIS, and other major research centers. As noted by the state corporation Rosatom, which oversees the project, the results achieved are in line with the stated objectives.

Over the course of the year, researchers conducted a series of experiments using “Russian prototypes of quantum computers based on four core platforms – ion, atomic, photonic, and superconducting – as well as a quantum-optical Ising machine simulator.”

For Practical Applications

In the first set of experiments, three prototype processors demonstrated a new benchmark – 70 qubits or more. According to the scientists, the results highlight the potential for scaling qubit counts in quantum computers. At MISIS, experiments were carried out with quantum processors based on fluxonium, while Moscow State University worked with processors built on photonic chips.

The research teams also succeeded in creating a compact integrated source of quantum “squeezed” light states. Such technologies could be applied in telecommunications systems and portable sensors.

In addition, scientists developed a prototype of a fully optical computing device – an integrated Ising machine. It is capable of solving problems that are beyond the reach of classical computers.
