Smart Meters in Russia Can Cut Power Automatically to Protect People

Intelligent devices track electricity consumption and monitor the condition of power grids.

Amurskiye Electric Grids is rolling out a large-scale project to install intelligent electricity meters. Since 2020, nearly 50,000 devices have already been deployed, transforming the management of power supply in the region and making it safer and more reliable for consumers.

Risks Reduced to a Minimum

Conventional meters are being replaced with “smart” ones. These devices not only record electricity consumption but also monitor the condition of power networks. Their key feature is the ability to automatically limit electricity supply when contracted capacity is exceeded. This reduces the risk of overloads and accidents to a minimum.

“Introducing remote control of maximum capacity through an intelligent metering system prevents power line overloads. Exceeding maximum capacity lowers power quality. That means low voltage levels and emergency outages. This function minimizes threats to consumers’ life and health in emergency situations,” said Andrey Burnaev, head of the electricity metering department at Amurskiye Electric Grids.

More Transparent and Safer

If household consumption exceeds the permitted threshold, the meter automatically cuts off electricity. Once the consumer switches off excess appliances, power supply is restored within a few minutes. This is particularly important in private housing areas, where network overloads are recorded most often.

The experience of Amurskiye Electric Grids is relevant not only for Russia but also for many countries facing aging infrastructure and illegal connections. The introduction of smart meters makes power systems more transparent and safer.
