Russia’s AI Traffic Systems Are Catching the Country’s Worst Drivers

Neural networks now monitor traffic behavior nationwide, spotting repeat offenders and reckless drivers among thousands of vehicles in real time.

In Russia, artificial intelligence is becoming a powerful ally in road safety enforcement. The State Traffic Inspectorate in the Sverdlovsk region recently reported how an AI system helped identify and detain a driver with a long history of traffic violations.

By analyzing footage from “smart” cameras, the neural network flagged one vehicle out of thousands for repeated speeding and dangerous maneuvers likely to cause accidents. Investigators later discovered the driver had also accumulated significant unpaid fines.

Digital Policing on the Highways

Across Russia, AI-driven surveillance systems are being installed to monitor traffic and prevent crashes. “Smart” roadside cameras now detect even minor infractions, while drones patrol federal highways, tracking speed and congestion. Neural networks process data from multiple sensors and video feeds, helping law enforcement predict risky behavior before it turns into disaster.

Officials say the approach is already improving road discipline and reducing accidents — a sign that Russia’s digital transformation is reshaping not just its cities, but its streets.
