South Ural University Is Developing a 3D Printer to Repair Heavy Machinery
The printer could be used directly at remote oil and gas fields in Russia’s Far North.
Researchers at South Ural State University have developed a concept for an experimental autonomous 3D printer. The device could be used to restore parts for heavy machinery operating at oil and gas fields in the Far North. It could produce machine components, engine pistons, gears and shafts. Its compact size would allow it to be transported directly to work sites in hard-to-reach areas.
The technology is based on wire arc additive manufacturing, or WAAM. The process uses automated welding in a shielding-gas environment to build a part layer by layer by depositing metal wire. This approach significantly speeds up manufacturing and eliminates the need for costly post-processing.
The team plans to commercialize the technology after addressing all remaining technical issues. The researchers estimate that refining the device into a working prototype will take another six months to a year.
