Digital Law Comes to Russian Universities

Russian universities are stepping into the era of digital jurisprudence by training a new class of legal specialists fluent in both law and technology

Zabaykalsky State University has launched a new academic track dedicated to digital jurisprudence — a field that sits at the intersection of legal practice and modern technology. The program operates under Russia’s federal Priority initiative, which allocates government funding to breakthrough scientific and educational areas poised to shape the country’s digital future.

Unlike conventional law programs, this course integrates IT disciplines with legal frameworks. Students learn how the online environment functions, how it is regulated, and what makes digital communication, cyber interactions, and digital assets distinct from traditional legal objects. According to the university, the first module has already been completed.

Digital Priorities

The program is delivered online to make it accessible for all interested students — including those enrolled in other fields. In the coming months, the university plans to expand the curriculum with interactive sessions, practical case work, and a deeper dive into digital regulation.

To support this direction, a dedicated digital department has been established to train specialists for Russia’s rapidly growing digital economy. Nationwide, Russian universities are set to receive over $286m for Priority-backed IT education initiatives. The latest round of project defenses was recently completed at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
