Digital Orthodontics Helps Russians Design Their Perfect Smiles

Patients in Russia can now take an active role in shaping their smiles thanks to digital tools such as intraoral scanning, 3D modeling, and artificial intelligence.

Dentists at Samara State Medical University have completely abandoned outdated plaster molds in dental prosthetics, replacing them with digital alternatives. The diagnostic and treatment process now begins with intraoral scanning. In just a few minutes, the digital tool creates an accurate 3D model of a patient’s teeth. This eliminates the discomfort of traditional molds and significantly improves diagnostic precision. All data is stored in a digital archive, ensuring nothing is lost and enabling use in future treatments or corrections.

The university’s Institute of Dentistry pioneered the introduction of this technology. Patients at its clinics can already access the service. A simulator program previews the final smile before braces or aligners are applied. Patients can see the expected outcome and even make adjustments to its “design,” transforming them from passive observers into co-creators of the process.

“Previously, orthodontists spent hours on plaster models and manual calculations,” said Nikolay Popov, Director of the Institute of Dentistry at Samara State Medical University. “Now we have digital scanners, 3D printers, and smart software. Orthodontists have become engineers and designers of smiles.”

With these technologies, treatment now takes 20–30% less time. The use of artificial intelligence to predict results is also setting new standards for Russian medicine as a whole.
