Rosprirodnadzor Licenses Construction of Two Power Units for Smolensk NPP-2
Computer modeling was used to assess the facility’s environmental impact.

Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources) has issued a license to build Power Units No. 1 and No. 2 at Smolensk NPP-2. During the design stage, specialists paid particular attention to the new facility’s environmental impact.
Monitoring points for assessing the environmental impact were selected during the design stage. This approach makes it possible to document current environmental conditions and build a comprehensive baseline for comparative analysis after the power units enter operation.
The new plant’s design includes a comprehensive set of environmental protection measures. These include modern wastewater treatment facilities and high-efficiency gas capture systems. The project also provides for a complete waste-management cycle and a closed-loop reactor cooling system using cooling towers.
