Gazprom Neft Launches Laser Aerial Monitoring for Arctic Infrastructure

The system detects even the smallest shifts in infrastructure components.

Gazprom Neft has launched a new laser-based aerial system to monitor infrastructure at an oil field in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. It is designed to improve the reliability and environmental safety of resource extraction in the Arctic.

The airborne laser scanning system draws on geotechnical data collected over the past several years. It automatically compares data on the spatial position of structures with a digital model of their intended position and analyzes the results alongside information on the landscape and ground temperatures. Algorithms detect even minute changes, helping teams quickly assess structural reliability and making measurements 10 times faster.

“Developing and deploying new technologies and approaches, along with proactive environmental risk management, are key principles of Gazprom Neft’s long-term environmental program. One of its most important goals is to achieve absolute reliability for the company’s infrastructure in permafrost areas. To do that, we are introducing new technologies that will help maintain consistently safe operations at fields in Russia’s Far North,” said Andrey Petrukhin, head of sustainable development programs at Gazprom Neft.
