At Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant, an automated monitoring system for crane operating zones has been introduced to improve safety during loading and unloading operations.

The system is built around video analytics. Cameras continuously scan the area, and if a person enters a hazardous zone, the system immediately issues an alert. The crane operator receives a notification on the control panel, while rigging personnel are warned by an audible signal.

“There are no comparable systems like this in Russia. This is an in-house development involving occupational safety and industrial safety specialists, as well as innovation teams and IT experts from Nornickel Sputnik,” said Ekaterina Zhiteneva, director of occupational, industrial, and environmental safety at the Bystrinsky site.

The system has already been deployed on six cranes, with commissioning work underway on several more.
