Spikatel Repels Phishing Attack on Logistics Company

Spikatel's Cyber Threat Monitoring Center detected a malicious file that had slipped through email filters and stopped a phishing attack targeting a logistics operator.

Security Operations Center (SOC) professionals at Spikatel detected a mass campaign of fraudulent emails impersonating a logistics company. Email security filters blocked the malicious attachment for most recipients, but some messages still reached their targets — which is where the SOC stepped in.

“For 90 percent of our clients, the malicious attachment was blocked by email security tools. At the same time, the message was delivered in 10 percent of cases. That's where the SOC comes in — it helps identify the suspicious file and alerts the company's security team to the attack,” said Daniil Glushakov, an analyst at Spikatel's Cyber Threat Monitoring Center.

The campaign was sent from a legitimate but compromised accounting email account, with messages disguised as invoices and contracts awaiting signature. Opening the attachment launched a script that downloaded a PNG file from the internet. In reality, the file was a container concealing a malicious library capable of quietly establishing itself in the computer's memory. The malware could have been used to steal accounting data, alter payment details, and remotely control the victim's account. Analysts alerted the security team at the affected partner company, allowing it to stop the attack before any damage was done.
