Digital Twin of Russia’s Innopolis City Gets Tenfold Speed Boost

Researchers at Innopolis University have upgraded the city’s 4D digital twin, making it ten times faster and far more precise — turning it into a powerful urban management platform.

Scientists from the Geospatial Solutions Center at Innopolis University have unveiled a radically improved version of the city’s 4D digital model. The updated platform now operates ten times faster and delivers significantly higher accuracy. Covering an area of 2,000 hectares at a 1:500 scale, the system is built entirely on domestically developed, import-independent software.

The virtual city integrates 258 mapping layers containing data across 64 categories of urban infrastructure. In total, the system displays more than 110,000 virtual elements — including 232 buildings, 127 detailed 3D models, and 315 kilometers of engineering networks.

To achieve this level of precision, the research team used cutting-edge technologies such as LiDAR scanning and drone-based aerial photography. These tools helped digitize the university campus, schools, technology parks, and residential areas.

But the project is more than a digital replica — it’s a full-fledged decision-making platform. City authorities can use it to analyze real-time data on infrastructure conditions, air quality, and citizen feedback.

The digital twin also supports predictive urban planning, helping model the impact of new construction projects and forecast city development trends.
