Russia's Ministry of Transport, together with its subordinate agencies, has launched a pilot program to digitize freight transportation on the country's inland waterways.

The pilot covers 20 routes spanning seven river systems across Russia. Three of the country's leading shipping companies are participating in the program, transporting fuel, construction materials, and food products.

On every vessel participating in the pilot, cargo data are collected using electronic transport waybills (ETNs). For the first time in Russia's transport sector, the project also links two tracking systems by synchronizing data from electronic waybills with the vessel's route-tracking information.

The current phase of the pilot will continue through October. The results will then be analyzed and used to develop the regulatory framework needed to support the wider adoption of digital river freight transportation.
