AI ‘Doctor Pirogov’ to Help Russian Physicians Diagnose Patients

A new AI system developed in Novosibirsk could ease the workload in clinics and expand access to medical expertise across remote regions.

Russian researchers have developed an artificial intelligence system called Doctor Pirogov — a digital assistant for physicians capable of verifying diagnoses across 250 diseases. The system analyzes patient complaints, medical records, and lab results to suggest a list of potential diagnoses, recommend additional tests, and propose treatment options. This innovation is expected to reduce appointment times and ease the burden on medical personnel. Beyond Russia, it offers a globally relevant tool for improving efficiency and access to qualified healthcare.

The system was created by scientists at Novosibirsk State University. According to the university’s press office, Doctor Pirogov combines neural networks with an extensive knowledge base on the relationships between diseases, symptoms, and medications — a database developed over the past decade.

A key advantage of the system is its ability to assist in remote areas where there is a shortage of specialists. Patients can enter their symptoms in advance, and the AI will generate a ranked list of possible conditions — from the most serious to the less dangerous. This approach improves patient triage and speeds up referrals to the appropriate doctors.

The developers are currently testing the system’s accuracy and reliability. Clinical trials are scheduled for 2026. Before large-scale deployment, the software must be registered with Roszdravnadzor (Russia’s health regulatory authority) and receive approval for use in medical practice.
