Biometric Tech to Eliminate Cheating in Russian Online Exams
Starting this winter semester, Russian students will be able to voluntarily use biometric identification during online exams, boosting trust in remote education.

The Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT) plans to launch a service that allows students to confirm their identity through biometrics during online exams, according to its head, Vladislav Povolotsky. The system is designed to let students take exams from anywhere in the world without being tied to their university campus, while eliminating the possibility of falsifying results.
The technology recognizes unique physical traits—such as facial features, fingerprints, or voice tone—by converting them into a digital code. It is also capable of easily detecting deepfakes, making the system resilient against modern forms of digital manipulation.
This initiative continues Russia’s broader rollout of biometric technology, already in use at government service centers, for payments, when opening bank accounts, and even as a substitute for public transport tickets. In some cases, citizens who used biometric ID received travel discounts.
