Russian Students Build AI Apps to Protect the Environment
Young developers in Altai are creating artificial intelligence tools to fight pollution and make recycling easier for citizens.

Barnaul has wrapped up the regional competition “Best IT Projects in Altai,” and this year’s standout theme was environmental monitoring and protection. Young scientists and programmers presented solutions that could soon be adopted nationwide.
One of the most notable entries came from Denis Loposhansky, a graduate student at Altai State University. He introduced a web app called “Nature Defender,” designed to tackle several environmental problems at once.
The app allows users to report illegal dumps by uploading a photo and geolocation data. Another feature uses image recognition to identify types of waste and direct users to the nearest recycling facilities.
The project aims to foster environmental awareness across Russia. It not only provides a convenient tool for tackling waste but also actively engages citizens in protecting their environment.
