Russia Expands Phygital Education in Universities

The Ministry of Science and Education is scaling up “phygital” programs—blending sports and digital technology—across Russian universities, setting a roadmap through 2030.

Deputy Minister Olga Petrova outlined the ministry’s strategy, supported by a working group and a coordination center at ITMO University. Universities have been given guidelines for holding phygital classes, forming competitive teams, and integrating technology into physical education. Over the last academic year, 850 events were held, alongside the launch of four master’s programs, nine professional development courses, and one retraining program.

The effort extends beyond teaching. Plans include methodologies for creating research centers, and the subject will be featured at the Congress of Young Scientists. Universities are also becoming hubs for sports-tech entrepreneurship. The ministry’s annual IT competition introduced a phygital category, drawing 652 applications from 60 regions, while the first youth accelerator for sports startups is already underway.

In December 2024, St. Petersburg will host the 3rd All-Russian Forum “A Look Into the Future,” which is set to go international with participation from CIS universities.

This systemic push lays the groundwork for the future of education. Phygital is no longer a passing trend but a new standard that combines physical activity, digital technology, and entrepreneurship to build the competencies of tomorrow. Its growth is tied to modern infrastructure plans: 25 new campuses by 2030 and 40 by 2036.
