Russian Agribusiness Automates Apple Orchards

One of Russia’s largest agricultural holdings is rolling out AI-powered “smart orchards” to cut costs, reduce labor, and optimize crop care.

The Russian agribusiness Steppe has unveiled an automated orchard management system that combines artificial intelligence with precision agriculture tools. The technology enables farmers to apply fertilizers and crop protection more efficiently, cutting treatment costs by up to 20 percent while minimizing human error and improving equipment performance, according to Comnews.

Mounted on a standard orchard tractor, the system uses laser sensors to measure the distance to trees, map their position, and pinpoint areas requiring treatment. This precision dosing reduces waste and ensures even coverage. Future upgrades will add ultrasonic sensors, telemetry, and visual monitoring for real-time orchard management.

The platform does more than save money: it also lightens workloads. The tractor operates autonomously, while spraying is handled automatically without manual control. Initial field trials confirmed the system’s effectiveness, and Steppe plans to expand and refine the technology.

Company representatives describe the initiative as “a holistic digital ecosystem” designed to boost efficiency at every stage of agricultural production.
