MTS has become the first telecom company in Russia to have a climate project officially entered into the national Carbon Units Registry.

The registry has added a project involving the construction of a data center with an energy-efficient cooling system, implemented in Russia’s Leningrad region.

The project, titled “Construction of a Data Center With an Energy-Efficient Cooling System at a PJSC MTS Site,” has completed validation and was officially registered in the federal digital system used to track climate projects, company representatives said.

An Energy-Efficient Data Center

The project is based on a modular data center operated by MTS in the Tosnensky district of the Leningrad region. The facility uses an adiabatic cooling system, which reduces the specific energy consumption required to generate cooling and, as a result, lowers the overall load on energy resources. According to estimates, the project is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1,380 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent by 2032.

Not a One-Off Project, but a Strategy

As noted by Yury Savelyev, MTS vice president for sustainable development, the project aligns with the company’s long-term climate strategy.

“Our goal is to reduce carbon intensity by 60% by 2030 compared with 2021 levels. Scaling modern data centers with energy-efficient solutions helps cut electricity consumption and strengthens infrastructure resilience,” he said.

The project documentation was validated by Kept Verification, which confirmed that it meets the established requirements for climate initiatives. The project profile is publicly available on the website of the Carbon Units Registry.

Oksana Gogunskaya, chief executive of JSC Kontur, added that the participation of technology companies in climate projects is consistent with international practice.
