Operator MTS has launched Tatarstan's first 5G network in the 4.9 GHz band (n79 standard) on the grounds of the Kazan Kremlin. This technology supports a far higher data transfer rate than the use of technology-neutral frequencies. Peak mobile internet speeds can reach 1.5 Gbps.

MTS gigabit networks on the n79 frequency had previously gone live in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, and Khabarovsk. It is noted that to access the high speeds, the user's smartphone must support the n79 standard.

"Tatarstan was one of the first in the country to pilot 5G, and today fifth-generation networks operate and are available to Tatarstan residents and guests of the region at Kazan's most iconic locations. By decision of the State Commission for Radio Frequencies, operators must launch 5G networks in the most popular locations of million-plus cities by 2028," noted Ilya Nachvin, Minister of Digital Development of the Republic of Tatarstan.
