Russia plans to create a unified registry of data centers that will consolidate technical and operational data on facilities nationwide, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said at a meeting on data center energy supply. He noted that the registry will help assess electricity demand and streamline issues related to grid connections.

“Relevant agencies are to conduct a comprehensive analysis to better understand the specifics of the data center sector. Mechanisms are required to balance the energy system of Moscow and the Moscow region, taking into account the continued growth of digital technologies and artificial intelligence,” Novak said.

Reassessing AI-Driven Demand

Novak also said there has been a surge in applications for connecting data centers in the central region, underscoring the need to evaluate how to meet rising electricity demand.

Regional authorities and utility companies have been tasked with analyzing both existing and planned data centers, developing connection mechanisms, and revising regional development plans alongside approaches to proactively building engineering infrastructure.
