Reshetnev University Develops Adaptive Workspace Lighting Prototype

The system recognizes what the user is doing and automatically adjusts brightness, light direction, and color temperature.

The development has been registered with Rospatent, Russia’s Federal Service for Intellectual Property. Its neural network identifies activities such as reading and working at a computer, as well as other tasks, with an accuracy of at least 88%. The lighting adjusts smoothly over three to four seconds, without abrupt changes that could cause discomfort. The device can be integrated into a desk lamp or ceiling light and used in homes, offices, and educational institutions. The system can operate autonomously or cover multiple zones.

According to the developers, existing solutions rely on manual controls or adjust lighting based on ambient light levels, without taking the type of activity into account. Different tasks require different lighting conditions, while inadequate lighting can increase eye strain and reduce productivity.

“Implementing this on a microcontroller proved challenging. We had to simplify the neural network so it could run in real time. The system can be integrated into an ordinary desk lamp or ceiling light,” said project team leader Victoria Leontyeva.

The prototype is built around a microcontroller and can be scaled to cover multiple zones. The developers plan to use the technology in smart homes and offices, educational institutions, coworking spaces, and home workspaces.
