The Baikal-Amur Mainline is entering another stage of testing automated and driverless technologies for freight trains. The project is intended to increase both freight volumes and train speeds.

The mainline is expected to be gradually equipped with technology that will allow trains to run almost nose-to-tail, synchronized electronically rather than physically coupled. AI- and computer-vision-equipped devices will monitor conditions on the tracks. The trains themselves will also carry various smart sensors to monitor the condition of all systems.

A machine vision system has already been successfully tested on the Tynda – Verkhnezeisk section. The equipment was installed on a 3TE28 diesel locomotive. It is one of the key elements of the future driverless train system. After the technology is tested on BAM sections in the Amur Region, the project is planned to expand gradually toward Khabarovsk Krai.
