A new computer vision system has been launched at Rosatom’s Center of Excellence for Developing Technologies for Closing the Nuclear Fuel Cycle in Zheleznogorsk. Its purpose is to ensure that all employees wear the required PPE. The AI system can detect violations such as missing gloves or safety footwear, as well as improperly worn masks.

The system currently operates with 95% accuracy, but further improvements are planned. In particular, its algorithms will be further trained using images captured directly under actual production conditions.

“Our facility is developing radiochemical technologies for Generation IV nuclear energy systems. Employee safety is an absolute priority in this type of production. An AI-based system is not a technology adopted just to follow a trend; it is a tool for addressing a specific operational challenge. It helps detect PPE violations in real time and respond to them more quickly,” said Alexey Kholomeev, the facility’s chief engineer.
