Employees at Rosneft’s Tomsk design institute have developed a new information system called Potok. It is designed to automate the engineering of oil and gas facilities and the assessment of associated risks.

“Potok improves the engineering process through adaptive calculation detail: the system automatically switches from annual to monthly planning during periods when changes in the properties of oil-water emulsions are forecast. The information system also handles routine operations, automatically exporting data and transferring it to a simulator, reducing engineers’ workload,” Rosneft’s press service said.

The system has already demonstrated its practical effectiveness during infrastructure design for an oil field in Eastern Siberia. Potok flagged that forecast pressure at one well pad would slightly exceed the allowable limit for two months. This allowed engineers to postpone the production of 120 metric tons of oil until a later date.
