Russia Expands Fiber-Optic Network in Arctic Region

A new 117-kilometer fiber-optic line built in Western Siberia is set to improve power grid management and bring faster, more reliable telecom services to remote Arctic communities.

Rosseti Tyumen has completed the construction of a 117-kilometer fiber-optic communication line in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area. The project, backed by more than 400 million rubles (about 5 million USD), is expected to enhance energy system management and open new opportunities for digital modernization in the region, according to Russian technical media.

The new line connects the grid control center in Kogalym with five remote substations that power Lukoil’s oil fields.

Key advantages of the line include high data transmission speeds, cybersecurity protection, and resistance to interference. Some of its capacity may also be made available to telecom operators, accelerating the rollout of mobile networks and internet access in remote parts of Yugra.

Such infrastructure projects not only improve the reliability of energy systems but also drive technological development in the Arctic regions.
