Researchers at the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed Russia's first AI model for assessing the condition of reindeer. The system is based on computer vision technology.

According to the research team, the development could play an important role in Arctic reindeer husbandry, where labor shortages remain a major challenge. They say automation can help address a significant part of that problem.

The new system evaluates an animal's health by analyzing its appearance.

"Our technology also makes it possible to monitor reindeer remotely without physical contact, eliminating the stress animals experience when wearable sensors are used," said Vladislav Sobolevsky, Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Information Technologies in Systems Analysis and Modeling at the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation, part of the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The AI model is expected to help prevent the development of many diseases and optimize feeding strategies, an increasingly important capability as available grazing land becomes more limited.
