Russia Deploys AI to Spot Potholes and Plan Road Repairs

A pilot program in Russia’s Amur region uses AI-equipped vehicles to detect road damage, improve maintenance, and plan upgrades.

A new AI-driven system for monitoring road conditions is being rolled out in Russia, starting with a pilot project in the Amur region. According to Amurpolit.ru, the initiative aims to speed up road repairs and boost oversight of road quality.

Special sensors mounted on Road Patrol vehicles now collect data on potholes, faded lane markings, lighting conditions, and debris. The information is analyzed in real time by artificial intelligence and transmitted to contractors tasked with fixing the issues.

Currently, four vehicles in the region are equipped with this technology, but transportation authorities plan to expand the fleet soon. The Ministry of Transport says the system will allow for quicker response times and better long-term road quality.

'The system will help detect and fix defects rapidly, as well as plan preventive maintenance,' the ministry said.

AI is also expected to be used in drafting road project documentation, evaluating regional development potential, and supporting the design of Russia’s growing high-speed highway network.
