Russia Launches AI Training Hub for Machine Tool Industry

A new tech education center will train IT specialists for Russia’s fast-growing machine tool industry, focusing on AI and microelectronics.

At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian officials signed an agreement to create a new education center that will train IT professionals for the country’s industrial sector. The initiative is part of a broader push for technological sovereignty.

The center, called 'Modul', will be located in the Kirov region, where a world-class university campus is currently under construction. Its curriculum will emphasize AI integration and microelectronics with a specific focus on applications in the machine tool industry.

The demand for locally made machine tools has surged following the exit of many Western companies. In 2024, Russia’s domestic machine tool production grew by 40%, but demand continues to outpace supply. Officials expect the industry to reach full import substitution by 2030.

Training specialized IT professionals is seen as a crucial step in this transition. Students at Modul will be equipped with machine learning skills and the technical know-how to support innovation in one of Russia’s most strategically important manufacturing sectors.
