Russian Cities Turn to AI-Powered Alerts to Boost Public Safety

In the southern city of Krasnodar, new surveillance and audio systems warn swimmers and deter vandals—in real time.

Krasnodar, a regional hub in southern Russia, is rolling out a smart city infrastructure to make urban spaces safer. According to Mayor Evgeny Naumov, new tech-driven safety features have already been installed at major public areas, including parks and pedestrian underpasses.

A key upgrade is a sound warning system integrated with video surveillance. When someone enters a restricted swimming zone, operators from the city’s Emergency Dispatch Service (EDDS) can trigger a loudspeaker message reminding them that the area is off-limits and under camera surveillance.

The pilot version of the system is currently operating at four popular recreational sites: Stara Kuban beach, Solnechny Ostrov, Rozhdestvenskaya Embankment, and the park at Zaton. City authorities plan to expand it to 15 locations by 2026 and to deploy similar tech at underpasses and memorials to prevent vandalism.

“Safe City is not just about surveillance—it’s about rapid response,” said Mayor Naumov.
