Russian Scientists Develop Intelligent System for High-Precision Heart Surgery

The new software allows surgeons to work with real-time 3D models of the heart during procedures.

Russian researchers have developed a unique artificial intelligence–based software solution designed to make cardiac surgery more precise and efficient. Created by scientists at Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics, the system is intended for the country’s first stereoscopic X-ray complex and enables real-time tracking of surgical instruments while generating a three-dimensional model of a patient’s heart.

The system uses two X-ray images to accurately determine the position of catheters in three-dimensional space, TASS reports.

“The algorithms have already been implemented as software modules and integrated into a prototype of the system,” said Sergey Zharoy, a research fellow at the university.

He added that an algorithm for the automatic processing of contrast-enhanced images was also developed this year. This makes it possible to build 3D heart models while removing extraneous details.

A New Level of Surgical Precision

The uniqueness of the development lies in its adaptability. The system can be used both in stereoscopic and conventional X-ray setups. This represents an important step in the digital transformation of cardiac surgery, reducing risks for patients and expanding surgeons’ capabilities.

“Implementing this system will improve control over catheter positioning and deliver a new level of surgical quality,” the university said.

For global medicine, the development opens the door to safer and more minimally invasive procedures.

Technical and clinical trials of the software are scheduled for 2029. The project is being carried out with support from the federal Priority 2030 program.
