AI ‘Inspector’ to Monitor School Meals in Moscow Region

Starting this school year, a mobile app powered by artificial intelligence will oversee school cafeterias, ensuring menus match official standards with 95 percent accuracy.
From the beginning of the new academic year, school cafeterias in the Moscow region will be monitored by artificial intelligence via the “Meal Checks” mobile app, according to the Ministry of Public Administration, Information Technology, and Communications of the Moscow Region.
The AI system visually analyzes every breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack in real time and compares them with the approved menu. It can recognize 113 different dishes with 95 percent accuracy. If a discrepancy is detected, the neural network instantly sends an alert to a responsible employee.
The pilot project began back in September 2023. Since then, the technology has helped correct 1,500 violations, while parental complaints about the quality of school meals have dropped by 25 percent.
On September 1, 2025, a new menu will be introduced in the region’s schools. It may include croissants, pancakes, cereal with milk, fish sticks, and chicken schnitzels. The AI inspector will ensure these additions also strictly comply with established standards, minimizing human error and oversight.
