Automation efforts are underway at the Kani-Kurgan border crossing on the Russia–China frontier, where authorities are working to digitize and streamline all procedures. Under a directive from Vladimir Putin, clearance times at the checkpoint are expected to be reduced to no more than 10 minutes, with full automation targeted by 2030.

A central component of the upgrade is a portal-based inspection system that automatically scans cargo and baggage using X-ray imaging to flag potential risks. The rollout of these technologies has significantly increased the checkpoint’s throughput.

“Average processing time for an empty truck is now about eight minutes, while a loaded vehicle takes up to 25 minutes. More than 90 percent of vehicles pass inspection without delays,” said Vyacheslav Filipyev, head of a department at the Khabarovsk customs office.

Officials also note that the X-ray equipment used at the checkpoint poses no health risks. Radiation exposure levels are lower than those typically recorded during airport security screenings.
