The Russian startup Russkie Drony has unveiled an innovative unmanned aerial system built specifically for the Arctic. The technology is designed to automate monitoring of critical oil, gas, energy, and telecom infrastructure across the Far North, according to the National Technology Initiative Foundation (NTI).

For Russia’s Arctic industry, the project is a breakthrough, providing reliable, year-round oversight of facilities in one of the harshest climates on Earth. Developers also believe the system has strong export potential for partner countries.

The key advantage lies in its resilience. The drone can operate at –40°C, in high humidity, and in strong winds. Weighing up to 30 kilograms, it can cover more than 170 kilometers on a single flight. The system also includes a droneport—a hangar for takeoff, landing, and servicing—and a neural network that processes collected data automatically.

According to NTI, the platform could cut manual labor requirements tenfold and reduce monitoring costs to just 200–300 rubles ($2.50–$3.70) per kilometer. The AI system analyzes weather conditions in real time, selecting optimal flight modes to maximize safety.

Prototype units are now undergoing final tests. The project was selected as one of the top 15 initiatives at the Archipelago 2025 innovation program, chosen from 250 applications for fast-track implementation and scaling.
