Russia is set to build its first automated warehouse, standing about 30 meters tall. The Orientir Group has received permission to construct the facility in the Bogorodsky district of the Moscow region, according to TASS, citing the press service of the Moscow Region’s Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Science.

“Bogoslovo” for X5 Group

The total floor area of the new high-rise logistics complex, dubbed Bogoslovo, will exceed 40,000 square meters. In height, the facility will be comparable to a nine-story residential building. It will be the first project in Russia implemented using AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System) technology, a comprehensive system designed to streamline the storage and movement of large volumes of goods within warehouse facilities. The customer for the complex is X5 Group, a Russian company operating in the grocery retail sector.

According to the ministry, the project calls for the use of an automated system for storing and processing goods, which is expected to significantly reduce the time required for warehouse operations.

Pallets will be handled faster, and storage density will increase, as goods will be placed across 25 to 30 levels. As a result, operational and labor costs will decline, since human presence at the warehouse will be minimal. The system will also make it possible to expand storage capacity without increasing the footprint of the facility, while automated inventory tracking is expected to reduce errors to nearly zero. In addition, the system provides for rapid delivery of goods to dispatch zones.

A Step Ahead

“Investing in a project like this is a step ahead of the curve and a way to set new trends in retail. We are proud that our company, which brings extensive experience in delivering complex, technology-driven projects, is building Russia’s first facility to deploy AS/RS technologies, and that our long-standing partner, X5 Group, will become the country’s first retailer to operate such a unique complex,” said Elena Babenko, CEO of the Orientir Group.

Earlier, IT-Russia reported that the Russian company Smart Machines had begun implementing a large-scale project to produce manipulators and warehouse robots. These systems are expected to help businesses optimize logistics and production chains, making them more efficient and less dependent on manual labor.
