Russian Power Plant Boosts Capacity with Homegrown Digital Tech

Tom‑Usinskaya GRES has increased its generating capacity by 209 MW after deploying a Russian‑made energy management system, marking a milestone in the digital modernization of Kuzbass’s industrial grid.

Tom‑Usinskaya State District Power Plant (GRES), part of Siberian Generating Company (SGC), has ramped up its output by 209 megawatts thanks to a newly implemented domestic software suite designed to optimize grid performance and minimize blackout risks in the energy‑hungry Kuzbass region. Developed by the Kemerovo Regional Dispatch Office of the System Operator, the System for Monitoring Stability Reserves (SMZR) analyzes network loads in real time and dynamically redistributes power flows across the Southern‑1 energy hub.

By improving the utilization of existing transmission capacity by 20 percent, SMZR effectively unlocks additional output equivalent to 209 MW—critical for the region’s heavy‑industry giants. This breakthrough not only elevates the plant’s reliability but also sets a new standard for modernizing Russia’s wider energy infrastructure.

“Not only does this technology boost Tom‑Usinskaya GRES’s capacity, it also establishes a blueprint for upgrading other power facilities nationwide,”

said representatives of SGC.

In the coming years, similar digital solutions are expected to roll out across other regions, targeting both municipal utilities and industrial networks.

The successful deployment of SMZR also lays the groundwork for further digitization under Russia’s national “Digital Economy” initiative, potentially driving federal‑level gains in energy efficiency and grid resilience.
