Russian Scientists Develop Software to Decode the Human Microbiome

Researchers in St. Petersburg have created Antimicro, the world’s first software tailored to Russia’s microbiome, promising faster, more accurate diagnosis of complex infections.

Scientists at St. Petersburg State University have unveiled a groundbreaking tool: Antimicro, a program designed to analyze the human microbiome. It is the first software in the world developed specifically with the characteristics of Russia’s population in mind. The system enables doctors to accurately identify infectious agents within hours, even in highly ambiguous cases.

Antimicro processes data from metagenomic sequencing, a method that analyzes all microorganisms in a biological sample. The program identifies bacteria, viruses, and fungi, while simultaneously assessing their antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity.

The platform also includes valuable modules: a microorganism reference guide, a drug database, and tools for selecting optimal therapies.

Looking ahead, the software has potential applications beyond medicine. Its capabilities could benefit pharmacology, agriculture, and the food industry.

The research team is now focused on securing certification from Russia’s Ministry of Health.
