Russia’s Supermarkets Are Rolling Out “Smart” Coffee Machines

AI-powered telemetry systems track brewing performance, predict maintenance needs, and help retailers tailor coffee offerings to customer demand.

The Russian retail chain Pyaterochka has begun deploying a remote telemetry system to monitor and optimize the performance of coffee machines across its stores. The technology analyzes brewing data in real time, predicts when maintenance or refills are needed, and even helps the company adjust its coffee lineup based on consumer preferences.

According to the company’s press office, the system can alert staff when ingredients run low or a cleaning cycle is due, ensuring consistent drink quality. It also provides analytics that help shape “the most relevant product offerings” for each location.

“In just the first half of this year, customers bought over 100 million cups of coffee in our stores,” said Georgy Kononov, Pyaterochka’s director of business support and efficiency. “Introducing smart systems that make coffee preparation faster and more reliable is key to strengthening our position in this market.”

From Pilot to Nationwide Rollout

The first 1,000 stores were equipped with telemetry systems by September 2025. Following a successful pilot phase, Pyaterochka plans to expand the technology chain-wide, making it one of Russia’s largest retail networks using smart automation to enhance everyday convenience — one cup at a time.
