Tatarstan Digitizes 76% of Its Dairy Herd

With AI-powered systems now managing more than three-quarters of the region’s dairy cows, Tatarstan is spearheading Russia’s digital push into livestock farming.

Russia’s agricultural sector is undergoing a digital overhaul, with Tatarstan emerging as a national frontrunner in smart dairy farming. Currently, about 76% of the region’s dairy herd is managed using digital technologies. A total of 188 farms across the republic have adopted IT-based systems.

Artificial intelligence is playing a hands-on role—not only feeding and milking cows or cleaning barns but also assisting veterinarians. The systems can now assess animal health and flag anomalies in behavior. For instance, digital assistants have become adept at detecting early signs of lameness in cattle.

This wave of digitization is strongly supported by government investment. From 2022 to 2024, Russia funneled 50 billion rubles into advancing IT in agriculture. A major milestone will be the rollout of the Agroprom platform later this year. The unified digital hub will integrate all available IT tools for the agro-industrial complex, spanning both universal and sector-specific applications. A pilot launch is expected by year’s end.
