Russian Scientists Develop Method for Modeling Aortic Valve Prostheses

The new approach takes into account individual characteristics of how the device interacts with a patient's body and reduces the risk of complications after valve replacement.

Specialists at Sirius University of Science and Technology and Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed a method for modeling a prosthetic valve for the aorta, the body's main artery, the university's press service said.

In severe cases of stenosis, valve replacement remains the only way to save a patient's life, while selecting a prosthesis based on echocardiography and tomography data does not make it possible to predict how it will interact with an individual patient's blood flow.

"Scientists at Sirius University of Science and Technology and Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed a unique comprehensive method for modeling the aortic valve. Unlike existing solutions, the method combines all key stages of calculation: model selection, determination of the mechanical properties of the valve leaflets and physiologically accurate blood flow," the university said.

A neural network recreates the trajectory of the valve leaflets, while a left ventricular model describes uneven blood flow. This will make it possible to select the optimal prosthesis before surgery. The results were published in the Russian Journal of Biomechanics.
